Where We Have Come From
Phase 1- Complete
In 2025, with the generous support of the Historical Society of Alberta, The Buffalo Way completed the first phase of this project — research, community relationship-building, and the production of a short documentary film introducing the project and its purpose.
Phase One established something more important than a deliverable: trust. Relationships were built with Elders and knowledge holders across Blackfoot territory. Protocols were honoured. The foundation was laid.
The Historical Society of Alberta recognized what this project represents — Indigenous history told by Indigenous people, through Indigenous voices, for the benefit of all Albertans. We are grateful for their early support and partnership.
Phase One is complete. The Elders have said yes. Phase Two is the gathering itself.
For generations, the Blackfoot people have carried their history in story, ceremony, and relationship with the land. That history — rich, precise, and alive — has never been fully gathered in one place.
The Blackfoot Timeline Project exists to change that.
Led by Blackfoot Elder and ceremonialist Camille Pablo Russell, this initiative is creating a living, community-held record of Blackfoot history — told by Elders, in their own words, on their own terms.

The Elder Gathering
In the fall of 2026, we will bring together 10 to 12 Blackfoot Elders for a two-day recorded council.
Over two days, these knowledge keepers will share stories, histories, and teachings that span generations. Every session will be recorded with care, archived with sovereignty, and returned to the community.
This gathering will not happen again in the same way. The Elders who will gather carry knowledge that is irreplaceable. What is recorded here will be available to Blackfoot youth, researchers, educators, and future generations for as long as the archive is tended.
The window for this work is now.
